The International Criminal Court, immediately before its 13th
birthday on July 1, 2015, appointed Silvia Fernandez de Gurmendi of Argentina as
the ICC’s new president. She is the first female judge to preside over the
global institution. She is one of three women to accept a leadership position
last year.
Born in October 1954 in Argentina, Judge Gurmendi has over
20 years of experience in international humanitarian law and human rights. She
studied law at the National University of Cordoba
and University of Limoges, and earned a doctorate in law at the University of
Buenos Aires.
The appointment to the ICC presidency followed her tenure with the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and election as an ICC judge in 2009. Some of her work before her
appointment to the ICC included representing Argentina
