Leading Figures in International Law

Alexis Mourre, France
Incoming President of the International Court of Arbitration (of the International Chamber of Commerce)

Alexis Mourre

As international arbitration assumes a more dominant position in the world of international law, international arbitrators are becoming more important to the international law movement and deserve to have their leaders recognized internationally.

One international arbitrator who has moved into position as a major figure in international arbitration is Alexis Mourre of Paris, who was a founding member of the French international arbitration firm of Castaldi Mourre & Partners, which has 30 partners. He has been a member of the Paris Bar since 1998 and has been active in the international arbitration activities outside of presenting or hearing cases. He is past vice chair of the International Court of Arbitration and past vice chair of the arbitration committee of the International Bar Association.

Morre was recently nominated president of the International Court of Arbitration, He will replace John Beechy of the United Kingdom. The recommendation for this appointment  was submitted to the International Chamber of Commerce World Council in June of last year.

According to one description of his activities, he is head of the arbitration and litigation department of his law firm. As of 2013 “he has acted in more than 170 ad hoc or institutional  commercial arbitration proceedings as counsel, expert witness, co-arbitrator, chairman or sole arbitrator.”

The International Court of Arbitration is “the most commonly used arbitration centre in the world.” It registered 767 requests for arbitration in 2013 alone, which produced 471 arbitration awards. Other competitors of the ICA are the London Court of International Arbitration, and arbitration centers in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Mourre is the author of many books and articles on international arbitration. He is fluent in four languages (French, English, Italian and Spanish) and has a working knowledge of a fifth (Portuguese).

Mourre is the founder and past editor in chief of Les Cahiers de I’Arbitrage-The Paris Journal of International Arbitration. The publication highlights current analysis of global arbitration issues by foreign and French practitioners.

He currently teaches at the University of Versailles (France) and the University of the Dominican Republic. In the past the arbitrator taught as a visiting professor with the University of Santa Clara (California).

The rising leader continues to hold various positions within the International Bar Association Arbitration Committee, the London Court of International Arbitration, and the Milan International Chamber of Arbitration.
