Challenges for Children's Rights Symposium

Sponsored by the Center for Global Legal Studies at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, the symposium aims to examine some of the most difficult situations confronting children around the world and the children’s rights issues that arise in these contexts. Using a thematic approach, the symposium will offer a look at a range of issues having a dramatic impact on children’s rights and welfare, including trafficking, armed conflict, migration, juvenile justice, HIV/AIDS, assisted reproduction, sorcery, and infant surgery. The symposium will also explore existing remedies available to children who suffer such human rights abuses as well as alternative approaches for ensuring the rights and well-being of children.

The Future of Environmental Protection
National Association of Environmental Law Societies and the Environmental Law Association of The George Washington University Law School

The 17th Annual National Association of Environmental Law Societies (NAELS) Conference, hosted by the Environmental Law Association of The George Washington University Law School. The four-day conference will encompass a variety of contemporary topics in environmental law, with a specific focus on legal issues relating to global climate change. The event will feature panels, workshops, and presentations addressing a range of environmental legal issues, including: climate change, international environmental law, water law, the property-rights movement, and law student activism. The conference will conclude on Sunday, March 18, with a lecture and a question and answer session with former Vice President Al Gore and a showing of the film "An Inconvenient Truth."

The Pedagogy of Legal Writing for Legal Academics in Africa

The conference will cover three main themes: (1) the emergence of Legal Writing as discipline; (2) the learning theory underpinning Legal Writing pedagogy; and (3) the “nuts and bolts” of teaching Legal Writing. The conference will include presentations by U.S. and African academics and will set aside time for “sharing sessions” for participants to learn about the other participants’ programs. It is geared toward legal academics in Africa who teach legal writing, legal methods, advocacy, and related courses. In addition, faculty who teach in clinics may benefit from the program. Moreover, law faculty deans and administrators are encouraged to attend.

A Symposium on Guantanamo Bay

Sponsored by the New York City Law Review, the Center for Constitutional Rights and the Center for International Human Rights at the City University of New York.  The symposium will be the first in the nation to focus solely on the legal issues stemming from the detention of individuals by the United States government in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  Turned over by Pakistani officials, neighbors, rival tribes, and in rare circumstances, in the battlefields of Afghanistan, these detainees have had a considerable impact on American and international jurisprudence.  They have sparked a debate in the wider legal community about the fairness and legality of their detention and treatment.

Fifty years ago the Treaty of Rome laid the foundation for the European Economic Community. Since that time, European integration has impacted the global trade regime in a truly unique way; the purpose of this conference is to identify those areas of greatest impact. Elements and issues of past, and present integration will be discussed with the goal of identifying their impact on trade relations with the global community and how, in light of lessons learned from the past 50 years, the members of the European Union may proceed over the next 50 years to strengthen trade both within the region and around the world.
