Second Sir Richard May Seminar

The second Sir Richard May Seminar on International Law and International Courts is being held in The Hague, Netherlands, September 24-29, 2006. The week-long seminar features lectures on a variety of international law subjects and site visits to various courts, tribunals and international law institutions in The Hague. The sites that are being visited are the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, the International Criminal Court, the Hague Conference on Private International Law and the Hague Institute for the Internationalization of Law.

The faculty for the seminar includes Hon. Hans Corell, former legal counsel to the United Nations; Judge Thomas Buergenthal of the International Court of Justice; Dr. William Gilmore, dean of the University of Edinburgh Law School; Dr. Rene Lefeber of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Professor Micahel Scharf, director of the International Law Center of Case University School of Law; Judge Kevin Parker, vice-president of the Yugoslav Tribunal; and Michael Kennedy, president of Eurojust.

The seminar participants include 22 American judges, and four judges from Argentina.

Argentine Conference on International Insurance Issues

From November 13-20 the Latin American Office of the Academy will present a series of three conferences on international insurance issues. The conferences will take place in three sites in Argentina: Buenos Aires, Cordoba, and La Plata. Speakers at the conference will include insurance experts from the United States and Argentina, as well as international insurance experts.

The United States delegation to the conferences will be James G. Apple, president of the International Judicial Academy; Judge Roger Titus of the United States District Court, District of Maryland; Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin; Dr. Robert Gibbons, president of the International Insurance Foundation; and Glenn Pomeroy of Swiss Reinsurance America Corporation.

Washington Seminar on United States Legal System

The North American Office of the Academy, in Washington, D.C., will conduct a one-day seminar for embassy officials on the United States legal system, on Wednesday, October 25, 2006. The day long seminar will include presentations on the structure of the United States government, court and court administrative structures for federal and state courts, history and development of the U.S. legal system, the trial and appellate systems in the U.S., and the criminal justice system in the U.S. The cost of the seminar, which includes lunch, is $75.00. Other Academy Programs

Programs being planned by the Academy for the year 2007 include: a third Sir Richard May Seminar on International Law and International Courts, to be held in The Hague in September; conferences on scientific evidence and intellectual property issues in Argentina; and one or more seminars for embassy officials on the U.S. legal system and criminal justice system, to be held in Washington, D.C.
