Beyond National Security: Immigrant Communities & Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights

Event Information
Thursday, October 14 2010 / 12:00 PM - Saturday, October 16 2010 / 4:00 PM
Northeastern University School of Law, Boston, MA
http://www.northeastern.edu/law/

We arre witnessing two significant trends in the treatment of noncitizens in the United States. The federal government has imposed increasingly harsh deportation policies, dramatically expanded the enforcement of immigration laws, and delegated more and more immigration enforcement power to state and local police--all in the name of national security. Similarly, a wave of state and local laws has been taking aim at the rights of noncitizens in areas such as employment, housing, health, family life, and education. During the same period, however, immigrant communities and their supporters throughout the U.S. are increasingly turning to human rights approaches in response. On October 14-15, 2010, Northeastern?s Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy (PHRGE) will bring together leading immigration and human rights advocates, scholars, jurists, and activists for a two-day intensive Institute to address these developments within a human rights framework. The gathering on the 14th and 15th will be followed by a student organized workshop on October 16th.

ILW 2010 will address the role of international law and institutions in reducing conflict, promoting security, fostering human rights, protecting the environment, facilitating trade and investment, and resolving public and private international disputes. Panels will examine subjects such as the extent to which treaties currently under negotiation or consideration would further these objectives, and the operation and effect of international organizations, international courts, and arbitral institutions on the global legal order. The two-and-a-half day conference features over 30 discussion panels and many networking events for lawyers and students. ILW is free for all members of ABILA, members of ILSA, students, employees of the United Nations, members of the co-sponsoring organizations, and members of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

February 2011

Gujarat National Law University International Moot Court Competition (GIMC 2011)

Event Information
Wednesday, February 09 2011 - Sunday, February 13 2011 /
Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India
 http://gnlu.ac.in/gimc/gimc2011.html

Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) is one of the few National Law Universities in India, which organizes an International Moot Court Competition. However, what distinguishes GNLU International Moot Court Competition (GIMC) from other International Moot Court Competitions is the choice of the Moot Problem, the quality of judging and the association of WTI as partner organization. GIMC 2010 had 28 teams from 3 different continents namely Asia, Europe and America participating in the event. With regards to the quality of judging, GIMC has always tried to invite the best legal minds to judge the event including legal luminaries from outside India. In GIMC 2009, we had Mr. Christopher Staker, Former Principal Legal Secretary, ICJ and Ms. Susan Karmanian, Associate Dean, George Washington University of Law. In GIMC 2010 the valediction ceremony of the competition was presided by the Honorable Cyriac Joseph, Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court. The judges in the final comprised - Mr. Shotaro Oshima, who is currently Member, Appellate Body, WTO, (There are only 7 appellate body members), Mr. Christian Haberli, Senior Consultant from the World Trade Institute, leading academicians, managing partner of a law firm and senior advocates from Supreme Court of India. In fact this was probably for the first time that a sitting member of the appellate body judged the final round of a competition. With these high scholastic standards that were set in GIMC 2009, and GIMC 2010 in mind, we have set about to make the 3rd Annual GNLU International Moot Court Competition (GIMC 2011) a more academically challenging and splendid affair. GIMC 2010 was on the list of recognized International Moot Court Competitions of various organizations like the American Society of International Law (ASIL), the International Law Students Association (ILSA) and the Asian Society of International Law (ASIAN SIL). The moot problem for GIMC 2010 was a unique blend of Public International Law, International Trade Law and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 1995 (UNFCCC). In fact GIMC is one of the few moot court competitions in the world where ICJ is the forum for adjudication while the disputes are arising from a trade agreement. The reason for the same is because of the increase in number of the Regional Trade Agreements and Free Trade Agreements and the increasing irrelevance of World Trade Organization. This has led to a situation where trade disputes are part of general disputes for which ICJ can also be approached. World Trade Institute (WTI), Basel, Switzerland has been the Partner Organization since GIMC 2010. WTI will provide scholarship to the winning team to attend its prestigious five weeks Summer Academy on International Trade Regulation. The Scholarship will cover the entry fee for the members of the winning team which amounts to approx 5240 CHF per person (INR 233, 785 per person or INR 702, 694 for a 3 member team). Westlaw was the Official Resource Partner for GIMC 2010. Westlaw provided passwords to all the participating teams. Furthermore Westlaw had sponsored books worth INR 50,000 for the Winning team and the Runner's up. These awards were in addition to the Black's Law Dictionary and other awards mentioned in the Official Rules of the competition, which were awarded by GNLU. In fact the awards offered in GIMC are one of the highest in the world. GNLU also has a tie up with Lex Witness as its Legal Magazine Partner, which is India's first Magazine on Legal & Corporate Affairs. It is an idea that is committed to ignite thoughts, views & concerns of the legal fraternity and offer an honest platform to share and express viewpoints. Country's top notch practitioners and experts contribute in Lex Witness with what is relevant to all stakeholders in the legal profession, aiming at brainstorming between the legal luminaries and hence bettering the legal practice in all its aspects. This competition is seen as a medium for legal empowerment, a mechanism for generating awareness of internationally relevant issues and bringing to the forefront laws that are quintessential to world affairs today and for a long time to come.
