Sir Richard May Seminar on International Law and International Courts

The second Sir Richard May Seminar on International Law and International Courts was held in The Hague, Netherlands September 24-29, 2006. Participants included 20 state and federal judges from the United States and four judges from Argentina. The Seminar included lectures on topics of international law and visits to the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, both located in the Peace Palace; the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia; the International Criminal Court; the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal; and the Hague Conference on Private International Law.

Principal speakers at the Seminar included Ambassador Hans Corell, former Under Secretary for Legal Affairs of the United Nations; Dean William Gilmore of the University of Edinburgh School of Law; Dr. Sam Muller, Executive Director of the Hague Institute for the Internationalization of Law; Dr. Rene Lefeber of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Michael Kennedy, President of Eurojust.

The Seminar was funded by grants from the Open Society Justice Initiative, the American Society of International Law and the JEHT Foundation, supplemented by tuition payments from judge participants.

The third Sir Richard May Seminar will be held September 23-29, 2007 in The Hague. Invitations to this Seminar will be sent out in late January or early February. Interested judges can request an invitation to apply to the Seminar by writing to the following address:

Seminars in Argentina

Three seminars on insurance issues for judges were held in Argentina November 13-19 in Buenos Aires, Cordoba and La Plata. The faculty for the seminars included judges, jurists and insurance experts from the United States and judges and insurance experts from Argentina. Members of the U.S. delegation included James G. Apple, President of the International Judicial Academy; Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson of the Wisconsin Supreme Court; Judge Roger Titus of the United States District Court, District of Maryland; Glenn Pomeroy, Director of Governmental Affairs for Swiss Reinsurance America Corporation; and Dr. Robert Gibbons, President of the International Insurance Foundation.

The agenda for the Seminars was prepared by Judge Ricardo LiRosi, Resident Director of the Latin American Office of the International Judicial Academy, and Dr. Aldo Alvarez, Buenos Aires lawyer.

The International Judicial Academy is planning three series of seminars in 2007, as follows:

Early May, 2007 – Seminars on scientific evidence for judges and courts, in Buenos Aires, Salta, and Mar de Plata

August, 2007 – Seminars on protection of intellectual property issues for judges and courts, in Buenos Aires and two other cities to be selected.

November, 2007 – Seminars on issues of insurance for judges and courts, in Buenos Aires and two other cities to be selected.
