Ronny Abraham, the relatively new
(February 6, 2015) President of the International Court of
Justice, started his legal career as an administrative tribunal judge,
immediately after graduating from the National School of Administration. He
joined the Office of Legal Counsel of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in
1986 and became an advocate general before the judicial organsof the Council of State until
1998, when he was appointed head of the Legal Affairs Directorate at the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, where he advised the French governmenton many issues relating to
international law, including genera public international law, international
human rights law European Union law and the law of the sea.
From 1998 to 2004 he appeared on
behalf of France in the International Court of Justice, the Court of
Justice of the European Communities, the European Court of Human Rights and
international arbitral tribnals.
