New Director Elected to IJA Board

Justice Ann BradleyIn February, 2011 at the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors, the International Judicial Academy elected a new member. The new member is Justice Ann Walsh Bradley of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Justice Bradley was elected to the Supreme Court in 1995 and re-elected in 2005. She was engaged in the private practice of law until becoming a circuit court judge in Marathon County, Wisconsin in 1985. She is a winner of the American Judicature Society's Harley Award, a national honor that is reserved for judges whose outstanding efforts and long-term contributions have resulted in substantial improvements to the justice system. Justice Bradley is an elected member of the American Law Institute, a former Associate Dean of the Wisconsin Judicial College, a former chair of the Wisconsin Judicial Conference, and a lecturer for the American Bar Association's Asia Law Initiative. She is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin Bench Bar Committee, a member of the Board of Visitors of the UW Law School, a member of the Wisconsin Federal-State Judicial Council, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a Commissioner of the National Conference on Uniform Laws. She also serves as a member of the Wisconsin Judicial Council. Justice Bradley received a B.A. degree from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a high school teacher before entering the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she earned a law degree in 1976.

Lucia Druetta Promoted to Director of Academic Programs at the IJA and Assistant Editor of the IJM

The International Judicial Academy is pleased to announce the promotion of Lucia Druetta to the newly created position of Director of Academic Programs at the IJA Office in Washington D.C. She will also serve as Assistant Editor of the International Judicial Monitor. In her new positions, Ms. Druetta will assist Academy President James G. Apple in developing and conducting educational programs in the U.S. and abroad for judges, court officers and other associated with legal systems, and preparing articles for the IJM. She was formerly Executive Assistant to the President of the Academy and Office Manager.

New Intern Joins IJA Office in Washington DC

Mr. Weixin Qiu from the People’s Republic of China joined the IJA as an intern in February. He has a Bachelor of Law’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Law from the East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai and holds a LL.M. degree in Business and Corporate Law from the Temple University School of Law in Philadelphia. Mr. Qiu worked at the Bureau of the Shanghai World Expo in 2010 and at Triway International in Arlington, Virginia where he acquired experience in assisting in the conduct of educational programs and interpreting. He is currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program at George Washington University School of Business in Tourism Administration and Events and Meeting Management. He will assist the Academy in the administration of its China programs.

IJA signs Cooperation Agreement With the Buenos Aires City Bar Association

Last November, the IJA Vice-President for Latin American programs, Judge Ricardo Li Rosi and the Buenos Aires City Bar Association President, Dr. Eugenio H. Cozzi signed an agreement by which the two institutions will work jointly in the promotion of instructional and research activities. The Buenos Aires Bar members will benefit from this association by attending conferences, seminars and other instructional activities given by prominent jurists and professionals convoked by both institutions. Program in Collaboration with the Law Library of Congress

In order to expand the educational exchange programs between the Academy and the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China the IJA has entered into a cooperative arrangement with the Law Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Ten Chinese Law students in two groups of five each from different Chinese law schools will be selected and participate in a one week program at the Law Library of Congress, under the direction and supervisions of the International Judicial Academy. The participants will be assigned a research project and also visit local courts and legal institutions. The program is scheduled to being during the summer of 2011.
