International Judicial Academy – Upcoming Events

  • November 14 – 20, 2010: The IJA will assist in the conduct of a seminar on commercial law for Russian Judges and government officials in Washington, DC and Wilmington, Deleware, conducted in conjunction with the Russian-United States Foundation.

Intellectual Property Seminar for South American Judges and Business Executives

From October 9 to October 16, 2010, the International Judicial Academy conducted a seminar on intellectual property for fifty judges and business executives from six South American nations.  Represented countries included Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The seminar took place in Washington, DC.  Participants attended presentations and discussion sessions about the American communications regulatory regime with officials from the FCC.  They also visited the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where they took part in case studies on copyright, patent, and trademark infringement.  In addition, Judge Marvin Garbis of the United States District of Maryland hosted the group and lectured on the role of the federal courts in the protection of intellectual property and his own experiences hearing intellectual property cases.  The judges and business executives visited the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where Judge Karen Moore explained the importance of the tribunal in deciding intellectual property cases.  Finally, the group toured the United States Supreme Court, where Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Clerk William Suter personally addressed the group and answered questions.

Sixth Sir Richard May Seminar

The International Judicial Academy conducted the Sixth Sir Richard May Seminar on International Law and International Courts from September 26 to October 1, 2010.   Twenty-five judges from the United States and three judges from Argentina attended the seminar, which took place in The Hague, Netherlands.  During the seminar, the judges visited the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Hague Conference on Private International Law, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, and the Special Court for Sierra Leone.  The judges also attended the trials of war criminals at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Court.  Finally, they discussed the functioning of international tribunals with renowned international law experts and judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys working for the international courts, including Judge Sir Kenneth Keith of the International Court of Justice, Judge Antonio Cassese of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Deputy Prosecutor Norman Farrell of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and Ambassador Hans Corell, Former Deputy Secretary-General for Legal Affairs of the United Nations.

Seminar on Court Administration for Judges and Court Administrators from the People’s Republic of China

From August 9 to 20, 2010, the International Judicial Academy, in conjunction with the Laurel International Corporation, conducted a training program on court administration for eighteen Chinese  court administrators in Washington, DC.  Before arriving in Washington, the participants visited the chief administrative office of the California state court system in San Francisco and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the United States District Court in Salt Lake City.  In Washington, the group attended programs on court administration at the Federal Judicial Center and the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.  In addition, they visited the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland in Baltimore, and the Law Library of Congress.  Finally, the group attended presentations on docket management at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, and observed a landlord-tenant proceeding in court.
