“Whither the ATS? What is the Future of the Alien Tort Statute after the Second Circuit’s Ruling in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum?”

Event Information
Wednesday, November 10 2010 / 6:00 pm
GW Law School; 2000 H Street, NW, (20th And H Street)

In mid-September, the Second Circuit ruled in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum that the Alien Tort Statute (“ATS”), which allows lawsuits in U.S. courts for violations of international law, does not permit suits against corporations. This decision could have major ramifications for the future of the ATS statute and other claims against corporations that have been brought in U.S. courts. What lies ahead for this statute and its potential role in corporate accountability? Join in the discussion with a panel of well-known experts in this field who will address the ATS statute in light of this litigation and what the future might hold in light of Kiobel and other recent rulings. This Evening Reception is cosponsored by the American Society of International Law; the Public International and Criminal Law Committee, the Immigration and Human Rights Committee, and the International Dispute Resolution Committee of the International Law Section.
