The International Judicial Academy is pleased to announce
the Curriculum for its Day-Long Seminar Program for Embassy
Officials in Washington, DC for the Winter/Spring of 2008.
Seminars are limited to 25 persons on a first-come, first-served

The Fourth Sir Richard May Seminar on International Law
and International Courts will be held September 21 - 26,
2008 in The Hague, Netherlands. Scholarships are available
to judges selected to participate in the program. Announcements
about this Seminar were mailed to U.S. judges nominated
by participants in the past three programs at the end of
January. Other interested U.S. judges can request an invitation

– May 2008
May 2008 - 6th Conference on Judges and Scientific Evidence
(Bringing Judges Closer to the Sciences) - Buenos Aires,
Argentina; Mendoza, Argentina; and Santiago, Chile.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY SEMINAR
– SWITZERLAND
From January 21-25, 2008, an Academy delegation from the
Washington, DC and Buenos Aires offices participated in
a seminar on intellectual property law in Basel and Geneva,
Switzerland. The 14-member delegation included 9 Argentine
judges, 1 U.S. District Judge, 3 individuals from Argentina
who work in the fields of science, technology, and medicine,
and Mr. James Apple, President of the Academy. In Basel,
the participants heard lectures on science and intellectual
property protection. In Geneva, site visits included full-day
presentations at the World Trade Organization and the World
Intellectual Property Organization. At the WTO the seminar
participants heard lectures on the general principles and
objectives of the WTO, the organization’s legal framework,
and the dispute settlement process. Among the presenters
at WIPO were Ms. Geidy Lung, Senior Legal Officer in the
Copyright Law Division, and Mr. Wolfgang Starein, Director
of the Enforcement and Special Projects Division.
INSURANCE SEMINAR IN ARGENTINA
- NOVEMBER 2007
From November 9 – 19, 2007, the International Judicial
Academy hosted its 2nd Conference on Justice and Insurance
in Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata, Argentina. 234 judges,
court officials, and legal and insurance professionals attended
the sessions in Buenos Aires, while 135 people attended
in Mar del Plata. The seminar focused on various issues
related to insurance, including the following: regulatory
systems; judicial management in complex cases; international
insurance issues; actuarial issues in insurance; workers'
compensation programs; and the role of reinsurance and re-insurers.
Dr. Ricardo LiRosi, Resident Director of the Academy office
in Buenos Aires, and Dr. Aldo Alvarez, President of the
Academy's Development and Support Board in Buenos Aires,
coordinated and directed the seminar. Dr. Gustavo Bossert,
President of the Academy’s Academic Committee of the
Latin American Office in Buenos Aires presided at one of
the sessions.
The U.S. delegation to Buenos Aires included Dr. James Apple, President of the Academy, and experts in the fields of insurance and reinsurance, as well as state and federal judges. The U.S. judges were: Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, U.S. District Judge for the District of Columbia (retired); Judge Charles Simpson, U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Kentucky and member of the International Relations Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States; Judge Ben Tennille, Chief Special Superior Court Judge for Complex Business Cases, North Carolina Business Court; and Justice Ann Walsh Bradley of the Wisconsin State Supreme Court. Kevin Ryan, U.S. actuary, and David Snyder, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel for the American Insurance Association, also joined the U.S. delegation.
